Schematic and PCB share

Hello All,

Today I want to talk about Schematic and PCB layout share. Joker Eco-System is not only Open Source, but Open Hardware too, and I want to start with the most ready module first – “Joker TV” (stand alone version). I have started an evaluation of Upverter project for Schematic&PCB sharing. You can open this link (opens in new tab) to observe “Joker TV” Schematic&PCB. Be patient though, as it can take about 2 minutes to load and display the project. After all you should see the PCB layout like on the screenshot below. You can also use the top menu to switch to a schematic view.

“Joker TV” Schematic and PCB

“Joker TV” actual hardware (Rev. 1.0)

Or you can download current schematic and PCB design here – joker-tv-usb-rev1.2

License

Schematic and PCB layout shared under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 (CC BY-SA 4.0) license. This license allows to remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, even commercially. If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original. You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made.

Project collaboration

“Joker TV” project can be forked inside Upverter. This allows collaboration between engineers on Joker Eco-System. But I need your opinion. If you have any actual hardware design experience please vote below:

Is upverter.com suitable for collaboration on Joker Eco-System hardware ?

I need your feedback to plan further steps as well. Should I continue switching to upverter.com or just share files (Pulsonix EDA) to github.com ?

Technical video & posts

Also, I have prepared a video with demonstration of signal tracing on “Joker TV” with upverter.com:

I’m planning a series of posts about Joker Eco-System hardware and software. Here are the first three:

Joker TV, FPGA Verilog/VHDL code

Joker TV, Linux/OSx/Windows drivers and apps

Joker TV, manufacturing (Technical and financial aspects)

And if you want to buy please place online order.

Stay tuned for more !

What made you use an “expensive” FPGA with a separate USB PHY instead of one of the chips that are commonly used in cheap USB TV sticks? IIRC there are even USB chips with an internal demod that allow connection of a second demod.

    • Abylay Ospan says:

FPGA with external PHY gives more flexibility in developing new features, for example:
      * CI interface (no need external CI controller chip), already implemented
      * TS stream generator, already implemented
      * TS muxing, already implemented
      * libusb integration (without any kernel-level driver), already implemented
      * Other cool stuff that we want to implement in FPGA in future

Silicon usb controller (like CY7C68013A ?) is not too cheap also – cost about $6. And you can add $3 for external CI chip. Total is about $9.
FPGA + PHY is $13, so price difference is not too big 🙂

You might want to talk to Zodiac TV UK about their ‘UTK TV’ stack, it is very innovative and they had some innovative views on software licencing.
